Paul, I would call e*trade and dispute this. Sounds like shenanegans going on at e*trade to me. I've known several people that have disputed so called "errors" like this at Datek and other brokers. However, e*trade I've heard are the most stubborn to do anything about bad trades or confirmations.

Check this out, they could have retracted your trade and pretended it was in error. Later, they could have borrowed shares from another account and switched things saying they shorted the stock at $51 1/4. Then they can cover today or maybe next week in the 40's and make a decent profit. And all they do is send you a message stating, "Oops, we really didn't sell your shares." What a CROCK! I would call the SEC to look into this if they don't do anything about it.

This hasn't happened to me but with the volume of trades I do per month, I'm sure it may happen in the future. I'd be interested in finding out what solution you find.
