Experience with dropped calls: That would be Cingular and through their shared network, T-Mobile. Such bad service that the California Public Utilities Commission is investigating their advertising claims.

"California regulators are investigating Cingular Wireless, the nation's
second-largest mobile phone company, charging that it has been "fundamentally
unfair to consumers" by locking them into long-term contracts and failing to
provide the services it promised.
The California Public Utilities Commission says it has received thousands of
complaints from Cingular subscribers who said that their calls were routinely
dropped or that the company didn't provide coverage where they lived,
worked or commuted. The company issues glossy brochures and slick
advertisements promising "unbroken" coverage in major cities across the state.
When customers tried to cancel, Cingular threatened to slap them with a
termination fee of $150 or more, the PUC said. Cingular told many customers
flatly that it had a "no return" policy. "

Also made for a nasty article in Fortune Magazine with the broken dialogue between the reporter and a Cingular official.

Verizon may not be providing great data service yet, but their voice service is extremely reliable, it is built on well-sited original equipment from GTE. Until the usage density increases the best service is provided by the lower frequency and larger cell provider.
