I doubt that. What was in it for the Iranians to support President Raygun, who turned Saddam loose on Iran and wrought havoc for much of a decade? If Jimmy Carter had won, I suspect the Iranians would have been better off.

If I were the Iranians, I'd have let the hostages go before Raygun got his finger on the trigger because I suspect he'd have said "Look, I don't understand all that negotiating stuff about the hostages. If you don't let them go right now, I'm going to nuke you". I suppose the Iranians could see the writing on the wall and called it quits when Carter was booted.

Now that Bush is running the show, we have a similar style of negotiating as Raygun ran. "Well, maybe Saddam is right about not having WMDs after all, but I'm gonna get him anyway and show everyone that messing with the USA results in major problems for the messors. He shouldn't have rewarded Palestinian suicide bomber families".
