You have to keep in mind that hindsight is 20/20. The Iranians didn't like Jimmy Carter and thought Reagan would give them a better deal with weapons.

I actually saw Iran's ex-president Abolhassan Bani-Sadr on CNN about ten years ago stating flatly that there was a deal between his government and the Reagan campaign to keep the American hostages in captivity. Many other prominent Iranians and even some people connected to the Reagan administration have come forward and stated that there was a deal.
