Hutchison Delays 3G in Hong Kong

(06/01/2003, BWCS Staff) The Hong Kong-based industrial group Hutchison Whampoa has announced that its domestic telecoms arm will not be launching a 3G mobile service within the next three months as originally planned. The company’s chairman, Li Ka-shing, says that the introduction of next-generation services in Europe will take priority; Hutchison’s subsidiaries in the UK and Italy are due to introduce their first 3G services later this month after failing to meet their self-imposed deadline of end-2002.

Hutchison is one of four 3G licensees in Hong Kong, where it is currently the largest mobile operator with a share of around 30% in a market of some six million subscribers. The other 3G concessions were awarded to Hong Kong CSL, SmarTone 3G and Sunday 3G.

Hutchison is hoping that its UK and Italian networks will be among the first European operators to launch 3G services and that each have will have attracted around one million subscribers by the end of 2003. Both companies will have their work cut out, however, as they are launching into highly competitive markets which are near saturation point. Hutchison has signed a number of high-profile 3G content deals; for example, it has contracts with the domestic football leagues in the UK and Italy to provide match highlights to phone subscribers.
