Last comment on the subject: urban planning is inevitably a government function, from zoning to infrastructure to the number of parking spaces provided in shopping centers, etc.

Having lived in many different countries with widely varying infrastructure styles, it is clear to me that how cities and suburbs evolve has a great deal to do with the lifestyle, health and well-being of the citizens.

And it's one area that can be changed dramatically without lawsuits, taxes, surcharges or any more regulations than you would find any any urban area, liberal or conservative.

Just my two cents.
