WSJ: Sunesis, Biogen Collaborating To Develop New Drugs
Tuesday January 7, 12:15 am ET
By David P. Hamilton, Of The Wall Street Journal

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Sunesis Pharmaceuticals Inc. has begun a collaboration with Biogen Inc. (NasdaqNM:BGEN - News) , Cambridge, Mass., to develop new drugs for inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, The Wall Street Journal has learned.
The deal covers four particular protein targets against which the two companies will develop drugs, as well as options for two additional protein targets. The agreement is potentially worth $60 million per target in loans and payments to Sunesis if development proceeds smoothly, as well as royalties from any successful product. Biogen will receive exclusive worldwide rights to any drug compounds that result.

(This and related background will be availabe on The Journal's Web site, WSJ.com.)

The work will proceed using Sunesis s fragment-based drug-discovery technology. The so-far unproven technique involves identifying numerous smaller molecules that can bind to portions of the target protein, then tethering these fragment molecules to produce a drug molecule that can be delivered in pill form.
