"Ergo, I feel fairly confident in my assessment."

Perhaps you would have a case for most people. I personally have refined my position during several debates on this thread. I have done a nearly 180 degree turn on the death penalty for example. I feel right in my assessment that the death penalty is resolute and justified for certain heinous actions. However, I found the arguements for the falibility of our justice system to be well founded also. Lacking confidence in the system to determine who should or who should not be put to death for heinous acts, I was compelled to change my stand and support abolishment of the death penalty. I have revised my position on many debates of substance after considering the arguements of others. I consider that an exercise in consciousness raising. Of course there are other entertaining discussion benefits that have nothing to do with growth, such as bantering and poking. I enjoy that also.

I did not have solid ground for my stand on the death penalty. When a differing perspective was offered that was reasonable, I felt compelled to adjust my position. So, I am at least one person who is willing to recognize lack of foundation when it is adequately pointed out. Often (especially in the case of personal attacks) there is a skewed perception that is being presented for the purpose of provocation. Lack of foundation is frequently a justified criticism. It is not discounted by pointing out that everyone or most others do the same thing.

Some people (you seem to be one) see this thread as simply a points game with no particular rules or ethics. Most people engage you in that light and so I can see how you may view others similarly. That was the point of my anectote.

"JLA because he likes to go around calling lots of people names, all the time."

Oh, now I see why you made that comment but that was not the train of thought I was on.
