An absolutely incredible admission by an official of the US gov't.

And it made no news, other than a backpage paragraph.

That's a more telling commentary than almost anything Brzezinski writes. If these were, say, middle-class English-speaking kids caught in the middle of international sanctions, it would have been impossible to say that, she would have been pilloried and an alternative solution would have immediately been found long before the damage was done.

Lacking political representation in matters of war, there's wisdom in ALL Americans doing some required service. Maybe professional military "Royal Guards" types will accept Albright's view, or things like sanitized remote bombing of urban areas, or the occasional "oops!" American in a car of suspects... but the average American would take more responsibility than that. The military and political leaders don't trust the average American to act with lethal force without being convinced it's really for defensive purposes. And rightfully so.

Madeline Albright was asked what she thought of this and she responded, speaking for the Administration, "we think it is worth it"
