Microsemi Introduces Second Three-Stage Power Amplifier For Portable 802.11b/g Combo Wireless LAN Applications
Tuesday January 7, 8:36 am ET
2.4GHz device produces a typical 30dB gain Current consumption reduced to 115mA Now offers solutions for all common IEEE standards Microsemi Corp. (Nasdaq:MSCC - News), a leading manufacturer of power management integrated circuits, today announced that its Integrated Products group has introduced its second three-stage broadband power amplifier for NIC cards and access points used in wireless local area network (WLAN) systems.
Designated the LX5512E(TM), the new amplifier is compatible for operation in both the 802.11b and 802.11g standards established by IEEE. Power amplifiers are critical in determining the range, data rate performance and power consumption of WLAN systems.
"Together with the LX5506E(TM) power amplifier that we are announcing simultaneously, Microsemi is now able to provide high-gain power amplifier solutions for all the IEEE 802.11 standards -- a, b and g -- that are being designed into current and next-generation wireless LAN systems," said Paul Bibeau, Microsemi vice president of marketing and business development.
The three-stage LX5512E is designed in an advanced InGaP/GaAs HBT RFIC fabrication process that allows the new integrated circuit to consume 115mA of total current while providing power gains of 30dB.
Commenting on their simultaneous power amplifier introductions, James J. Peterson, Microsemi president and chief executive officer said: "Microsemi has an aggressive new product development plan that includes expanding our wireless LAN product offerings. Wireless applications continue to be a bright spot among electronic OEMs."
Most projections for WLAN chipsets show a compound annual growth rate exceeding 50% in units and between 20%-25% in dollars between 2000 and 2005. Power amplifiers are used in a ratio of at least 1:1 with WLAN chipsets.
