I think that if one of the current third parties ever got enough critical mass to appear truly viable, Americans (who supposedly love an underdog) would get behind it in numbers. It wouldn't surprise me to see this happen in my lifetime, given the increasingly monolithic state of the Republicrats.

My pick for the most likely to succeed is the Libertarian Party, although it would no doubt have to moderate its current stance..
