Microsemi Introduces First Three-Stage Power Amplifier For Portable 4-6 GHz Wireless LAN Applications

Microsemi Corp. (Nasdaq:MSCC - News), a leading manufacturer of power management integrated circuits, today announced that its Integrated Products group has introduced the LX5506E(TM), its first three-stage broadband power amplifier for NIC cards and access points used in wireless local area network (WLAN) systems.
ADVERTISEMENT Power amplifiers are critical in determining the range, data rate performance and power consumption of WLAN systems.
"Like our two-stage WLAN amplifiers, the new higher gain LX5506E provides outstanding performance that addresses low power consumption needs of portable applications, while increasing output power gain to 24dB in the 5.15 to 5.85 GHz frequency band or 26dB or higher in the lower 5.15 to 5.35 GHz band," said Paul Bibeau, Microsemi marketing vice president.
"On-chip differential power detectors simplify customer design-in and saves them external components as well," he added.
Microsemi targets the new 4-6 GHz amplifier for 802.11a broadband applications, HyperLAN2 portable applications, the FCC Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure (U-NII) band, and the 4.9 GHz band recently introduced for WLAN applications in Japan.
The LX5506E is designed in an advanced InGaP/GaAs HBT RFIC fabrication process that allows the new integrated circuit to consume less than 200mA of total current while providing power gains of 26dB.

The new Netgear and D-Link dual-band wireless adaptor cards, for example, are powered by our two-stage LX5503(TM) power amplifier," Peterson noted.
Most projections for WLAN chipsets show a compound annual growth rate exceeding 50% in units and between 20%-25% in dollars between 2000 and 2005. Power amplifiers are used in a ratio of at least 1:1 with WLAN chipsets.
