It didn't play out very well for Democrats. If Gore and Senate Democrats had come out squarely against Clinton for perjury, Gore would have been made President and he would have been elected in 2000. This is an internal weakness of Democrats that they lack the fortitude to stand behind their own principals even when it hurts. Consequently more often than they might expect, they pay a higher price for not having been true to the public.
