I like to think that most welfare recipients today would like to get off the dole and experience the self respect that comes with paying one's own way. Yeah I can concur with this part. Natives on reservations is probably the extreme example. People in most cases have to have lost self respect to want to live that way.... I favour a consumption tax and not a 'free' ride for anyone (well some but very few exceptions).... EDIT: Actually in Canada you don't need to leave a major city like Toronto for examples..
