I doubt very much whether they actually were fooled in that operation. If they had wanted to actually snuff out the whole bunch they could have. What they wanted was to capture a few for intelligence reasons. They probably anticipated they would fail, but in failure they would put the rest on the run. Perhaps that is not such a bad thing.
