AS, the Manhatten project ( Atomic bomb)was the single largest gov't expenditure up to that point - I think it was $2 billion. The money was very well spent - it saved the lives many US servicemen. An invasion of Japan would have cost hundreds of thousands of US lives. Don't underestimate the value of a strong defense. mike
