I don't know what the technical issues are, but the historic contention has not always been a 3 gHz threshold. I recall that shortly before P4 hit 1.8, a popular contention was that 1.8 was the threshold; then when P4 hit 2.5, folks said that 2.5 gHz was when the performance benefits would be overwhelming, etc.

At 2.5GHz we are clearly *past* the threshold ... I know, I'm running it.
