KT,

>he did have some concept of cause and effect<

I agree with that.

1. He knew that if the Fed printed a lot of money it would cause a boom that he would get credit for.

2. He knew that if it started to implode globally he better make sure that he funded the IMF so they could impose conditions on debtors that guaranteed Wall St few losses and 3rd world countries a lot of suicides and riots.

3. He knew that if people had reasonably accurate government stats to work with they might see through some of bull. So he made sure to tweak them appropriately.

4. He knew that it was better to look the other way during the options scams, big bath accounting scams, IPO scams etc... because he needed to remain popular with corporate America in order to raise money.

5. Etc...

Sorry to be such a pain in the butt on this, but I have a theory (or at least a value system) that is not consistent with many other peoples'.

When I was a teeneager I spent a real lot of time in sleazy NY poolrooms full of hustlers and assorted low lifes. IN all those years I only got scammed once and it was for an insignificant amount of money.

On the other hand, I find the white collar world a lot tougher to cope with.

The main reason is that when I was dealing with people in the pool room, I knew they were out to get me. I knew to be on my guard at all times. I knew what to expect. There was no pretense of anything other than the reality.

I often expect more from bright educated people that make even more money than I do. So my guard is always down and I have paid for that a few times in my career.

The hustlers let you know they are trying to stab you in the back.

The white collar guy stabs you in the back with a smile on his face.

I guess what I am saying is that I think Bush is more or less clueless about economics, but I sort of knew that going in. I also knew what to expect. I also think he more or less has good intentions most of the time even when he's doing things I think are dumb. So I am a bit forgiving.

Clinton is more like the really smart guy that knows exactly what he's doing when he stabs you in the back. And while he's doing it and telling you he feels your pain, he's busy twisting the knife some more. :-) I have a bigger problem with that.
