NEW DELHI: In response to the tariffs for wireless in local loop (WLL-M) services announced by Reliance Infocomm, Tata Teleservices will soon offer new tariff schemes that customers will find even more attractive.
The company will file the new tariff structure with the telecom regulatory authority of India (TRAI) for approval.
“We have internally taken a decision to offer new tariff packages that customers will find more attractive,” said S Ramakrishnan, MD of Tata Teleservices. However, he did not disclose the new tariffs. The company will also tie up with the finance companies so that the CDMA handsets can be offered at easy instalments. “This will reduce the entry cost,” said Mr Ramakrishnan. Cost of a CDMA handset is between Rs 7,000 and Rs 10,000. The company has procured handsets of LG and Kyocera. Cost of an LG handset is Rs 7,500, while that of Kyocera is Rs 7,000. This is a high entry barrier compared to GSM. GSM handsets are easily available for as low as Rs 2,500 in the grey market.
As per the tariffs announced by Reliance Infocomm, a subscribers will have to make a down payment of Rs 14,400 for three years, for a package that excludes a handset, and Rs 21,000 for a package inclusive of a handset.
Instead of making this lumpsum payment, a subscriber has the option of paying an initial sum of Rs 3,000 and Rs 600 every quarter thereafter for three years. A subscriber will get free airtime of 400 minutes per month, free incoming calls, STD with Reliance Infocomm network free for first 400 minutes, 40% discount on STD calls made to other networks for first 400 minutes. Moreover, the pulse rate is only 15 seconds.
For calls beyond 400 minutes, the company will charge 40 paise per minute. Under its alternate tariff plan in Delhi, Tata Teleservices is offering 1,200 minutes of free airtime for outgoing calls at a monthly rental of Rs 599.
