Do you think that the Earth was the center of the universe when people held that opinion? Do you think it stopped being the center of the universe when another opinion was formed? Or do you think the state of the case was always "thus and such", only it took better information and/or closer analysis to find out the truth?

I am perfectly happy to say that some opinions are reasonable within a context of limited information and/or analysis, and will be doomed to revision ultimately. That does not mean that when they are regarded as no longer tenable, it is a mere change of fashion.

I never even suggested that inner conviction had any probative value......
