Yes, Jim, the Iraqi war was quite a bit more, and less, than advertised. Not only was it a calculated and timely move to incite undecided Americans to vote for George Bush in an election he was in danger of losing (it never ceases to amaze me how susceptible some of us are to a bit of flag waving and patriotic music), but it turns out now that our smart bombs were extremely stupid (inaccurate). Through diplomatic channels we repeatedly signalled to Hussein that we would NOT move to protect Kuwait, and then tricked him at the last moment, deliberately. We buried thousands of terrified, hastily conscripted Iraqi soldiers--young civilian men with wives and small children--alive in the sand when we fire-bombed them, unnecessarily, while they were trying to retreat. And Bush decided NOT to have Saddam killed, so that if we all forgot what a HERO he was before the election and he was in danger of losing again, he had a reason to go back in.
