Lieberman Would Pick Muslim as VP (2003-01-08) -- Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-CT, will not only announce his candidacy for president on Monday, but he'll promise to pick a Muslim running mate. Aides to Sen. Lieberman said he wants to demonstrate there is "room for everyone under the big tent of the Democrat party." Some political strategists hailed the news as a "master stroke of tolerance" which would ring in a new era of world peace. "We're already looking at a short list of popular Muslims," said one aide. "We're weeding out the ones who hate Jews, and believe Israel has no right to exist, so the list is getting short fast. Unfortunately, the ones who don't hate Jews have no name recognition."
