John Chambers does not want to become Dell Computer's (nasdaq: DELL - news - people ) next victim. After beating up on PC rivals like Hewlett-Packard (nyse: HPQ - news - people ) and Gateway (nyse: GTW - news - people ), Dell has trained its sights on the communications equipment market, where Chambers' Cisco (nasdaq: CSCO - news - people ) now thrives. But the CEO has vowed to stop the tech barbarian at the gates. "You will see the Dells of the world and others attempt to come at us from below," Chambers told investors at a Morgan Stanley (nyse: MWD - news - people ) conference in Scottsdale, Ariz. on Monday. "We won't just play defense, we will play offense as well." (Here's hoping the market refs will judge his defense-offense "plays" more intelligently than the NFL officials in Sunday's N.Y. Giants-'Frisco 49ers playoff game.) Chambers said his firm will spend $150 million this year on a global advertising campaign to raise the company's brand awareness. The CEO also said he will continue acquiring small private businesses and partner with one of the large telecom equipment makers, such as Lucent Technologies (nyse: LU - news - people ) or Canada's Nortel Networks (nyse: NT - news - people ).
