Actually, you are wrong. Even Ptolemy did not pretend that he was basing the geocentric hypothesis on inferences from observed data. He based it on Aristotelian metaphysics, and his understanding of the relation of the sublunar realm to the other spheres. It was widely known that the heliocentric hypothesis was plausible, in fact. In any event, we are in a far greater position to point to corroborative data, improved methodology, and so forth.
A mere change of fashion is something that might readily change back. Some things are mere changes of fashion, some are not.
