We had a friend probably 6 to 8 years ago who retired from the company. At the time all of us lived in Japan but the company office we were all based out of was in CA. Even though my friend was retiring to a different state - with no income tax - CA claimed that he had to pay taxes on his retirement - from then on - because the company he retired from was based there. Their reasoning was that the money had been earned in CA. I thought it was a major rip off for him. Not sure if things are still the same in that regard.
