i concur, I spent time in the military during Nam. Went there because of the draft. I gained much more from the experience than any other experience in my life, except fatherhood.

i think that many areas could be exploited for national service, with the military being one option.

won't happen, but i'd be all for it! also agree that Rangell's motives are suspect, but the idea has merit
