OT: You are really advocating two years of Slavery, Hawkmoon

Don't want to spend too much time on this issue Lindy since it's off topic.. However, slavery is a non-paid status and even draftees get paid..

We force all children to attend public school for 12 years in an unpaid status and no one calls that slavery (though I thought it was at the time.. :0) What right does the state have in forcing us to attend school if we, or our parents, don't desire it??

Same argument... 2 years of compulsory service gives every American a common experience in their Adult life.. After they give the country two years of service they will have greater discipline than they had before.. And the military has a cheap labor pool for those relatively low skilled job fields.

Of course, there's nothing preventing a draftee from "going career" and receiving a healthy salary increase (equivalent or more than current rates) in order to maintain a ready cadre of trained NCOs and officers...

There just exists a distinct lack of consideration for serving the nation, rather than being served by it..

And heck.. most kids waste the first 2 years of their adulthood getting drunk and getting high, or partying their way through their freshman and sophmore years of college... This will keep them busy and give them some life experience, structure, and discipline.

I think Rumsfield was a bit overboard about how much time it would take to train them and churn them out.... We can have both the draft and volunteers..
