Gillette Confirms Purchase of EPC Tags (not sure if people saw this - it came from the RFID Journal) Gillette today confirmed that it would purchase up to 500 million RFID tags from Alien Technology. Jan. 6, 2003 - The Gillette Company today confirmed that it has placed a major order for RFID tags from Alien Technology. RFID Journal broke the news that Gillette planned to purchase 500 million RFID tags on Nov. 15 (see Gillette to Buy 500 Million EPC Tags ). Neither Gillette nor Alien indicated in their press release how much Gillette would pay for the tags, or the terms of delivery. Alien's press release says that it "has won an order from The Gillette Company for 500 million low-cost radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags. However, Gillette's press release indicated the purchase may have conditions. It says: "Gillette will begin testing tag technology through its supply chain by placing RFID tags in select products for the US market. If successful, up to half a billion tags could be placed on Gillette products over the next few years." The two companies could not be reached for comment. Additional information will be posted on the RFID Journal Web site when it becomes available.
