Nice to see the strength in the latter half of December.....RSH also stated that December was closer to plan than November or October.

Hmmm....maybe I should go back and listen to the Circuit City CC from a couple of days ago (never saw a monthly breakdown for them). PCS needed a strong latter half of December to have positive net adds. The headline numbers havent been great, but perhaps the trends for December allowed them to make the top end of quidance.

The increase in sales for the five-week period ended Jan. 4, including the addition of 76 Best Buy stores in the past 12 months. Comparable store sales increased by 0.4 percent, fueled by increased customer traffic at the Company's website and consumer electronics stores.

"December sales increased despite the industry-wide weakness in retail sales, reflecting the strength of our brands, intelligent use of promotions and outstanding execution across the organization," said Brad Anderson, vice chairman and chief executive officer of Best Buy.

"Sales improved as the month progressed," Anderson added. "Not only were there more last-minute shoppers, but sales continued to be strong after the holiday, leading to a record month. It is gratifying to deliver sales growth despite one of the most challenging periods in the last decade."

The higher-than-expected increase was driven by strong sales in a variety of product categories, including notebook computers, wireless, digital televisions, digital cameras, digital camcorders, video gaming and DVD software. The highest sales growth came from our stores in the Seattle, Sacramento and San Diego markets.

"We believe that we grew share in several product categories this holiday, including many popular digital products as well as notebook computers and wireless phones," Anderson added. "Customer traffic was up, despite a Christmas that was weak for most retailers."
