I'm in the Dallas area. Certainly New Yorkers are well aware that they are not in New England, but many Americans lack a great deal of geographical knowledge far beyond their own regions and elsewhere in the world. I actually met a grown man once who was impressed when I showed him where Africa was on a globe.
