Wow. It takes quite a good deal of ignorance not to know where Africa is when its is just sitting there staring you in the face. But you are correct. Americans in general are terribly ignorant of geography - even of American geography. As kids we had to memorize not just general American geography, but topography (Coastal Plain, Appalachian Range, Interior Lowlands, etc..) and then learn the sub-topographical features of areas within these major areas (such as the Piedmont and Allegheny Plateaus of the SE U.S.) I still remember that stuff just like yesterday and I use it to a surprising extent even today.

But today memorization and serious study is out. Teachers are big on "thinking skills." Problem is, kids don't be seeming to be doing a whole lot of thinking these days because they ain't got no facts in their heads to think about.
