From the history I have read, a lot of ordinary Germans knew something really evil was happening with the Jews, but intentionally closed their eyes to it, and even abetted it in their little ways. Of course virtually nobody defends it now, as virtually nobody defends American slavery now. But both had at the time much more support from ordinary people than we sometimes like to think, because it puts such a dark tinge on human nature.
