I was suggesting why the Times might plausibly be liberal, even though it is a daily paper, and pointing to the experience of the Post, becoming more liberal during a period of monopoly, and more centrist after a significant challenger emerged. Now, you are right, there is a limit to how far left these things can go. National Review, The New Republic, and the Nation all require subsidy. That is partially because of a preoccupation with politics not shared by the ordinary citizen, but also because of a shaper ideological identity than, say, the Atlantic or Esquire........ |
