Jim,

re: Hasn't the Sigma SD-9 w/foveon been out for about 9 months?

About six weeks, I think.

re: Why aren't other companies offering foveon cameras?
Could be the same marketing problem AMD has...Megapixels sells?

It's still very new, it takes time to design in a new sensor. True Foveon needs a major, a Sony, Kodak, Olympus, Nikon, HP. If it gets one, the other should follow (assuming the model sells).

One disadvantage is that the data out is raw data, and requires software manipulation. That hurts in the low end market.

It could be a home run, or it could be a strike out. But it's very early in the game; the first inning. Think of the Sigma camera as almost a prototype. With the new technology, I was happy to see that they got it out the door in volume, and at a lower price than equivalent cameras. It shows that it's manufacturable.
