ESS Technology Announces DVD Recorder Platform

Thursday January 9, 7:15 am ET

FREMONT, Calif., Jan. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ESS Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: ESST - News), a leading provider of silicon solutions for digital video and digital home entertainment systems, announced the availability of the DVD recorder platform for the fast growing DVD+R/+RW recordable market.

The DVD recorder platform, based on ESS's advanced encoding and decoding silicon and software, offers manufacturers a comprehensive and cost-effective total system for rapid entry into the expanding DVD recorder market. With this announcement, ESS joins Microsoft, Philips, Ricoh, Thomson Multimedia, Sony Corporation and others in support of the DVD+R/+RW recording format.

"This new platform builds on our strong technical and market leadership in the digital entertainment market and enables manufacturers to build full-featured DVD recorders for under $400. We expect that this platform will help the DVD recorder market grow to the 32 Million units forecasted by InStat for 2006," commented Patrick Ang, executive vice president and chief operating officer at ESS Technology.

Mr. Ang went on to say, "ESS's built-in Time Based Correction (TBC) feature results in significantly better quality DVD recordings from VCR tapes, and we believe this is a must-have feature for DVD recorders to replace VCRs."

DVD recorders based on this platform offer consumers the ability to archive their existing VHS tapes to high-density DVD disks and expand their media library to include new content from TV's, digital cameras, camcorders, and other popular consumer devices. The platform is based on ESS's innovative low-cost, simple architecture that includes a full-featured MPEG-2 encoder coupled with a proven DVD decoder. The platform has interfaces for hard disk drives, DVD drives, as well as a 1394/DV port for fast, high quality archiving of camcorder video to DVD disks.
