Take a look at this chart; it's the S&P divided by the VIX. Trading the VIX Charts from Pciq on the FOOL tinyurl.com I don't know that the top line would be very useful, but the bottom seems to be a good medium-term bottom indicator. The idea is from Zeal: Trading Volatility Ratios safehaven.com
