North Korea nuclear drama escalates

news.bbc.co.uk

North Korea's true intentions remain a mystery

Two North Korean diplomats are meeting a former US ambassador in the US state of New Mexico, in a new move to defuse tension over Pyongyang's nuclear programme.
"Things are going very well," said a spokesman for New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, a former ambassador to the United Nations.

But as the talks got under way North Korea announced that it was withdrawing immediately from the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT).

The BBC's Charles Scanlon in Seoul says Pyongyang's announcement is a very serious escalation.

North Korea has already expelled UN inspectors from its controversial nuclear complex at Yongbyon.

Our correspondent says North Korea may now be signalling its true nuclear intentions and going for broke.

The New Mexico meeting is not officially sponsored by the Bush administration but has its support.
