I view current regulators pretty much the same way Peter. Overworked, underpaid, and very bitter at having to work in anindustry where Joe Blow rookie makes more money than he does....the very succesful broker making in a month what he makes in a year. I see THEM being jaded! Imagine...they see the seedy side of the industry. Unfortunately, they have to pick their battles. Probably 1 in 50 or 100. That's why they turn the other way. That's why it takes them 12 years to come down on someone. They are also having to deal with lawyers all the time. Lawyers shouldn't get paid by the hour!
Anyways...regulators should hire more people and do better jobs. They should be better paid also. Thems' my two bits.
As far as coming down on shortsellers>>>>>>>>>>.The amount of people that sell short versus the amount that go long is probably about 1 in 10000 if not more. How else can you explain the phenomenon of this site. Unfortunately for short sellers, the long lobby group is gargantuan compared to the short lobbyests'. It is definitely more in the interest of the longs. Shorts are looked at as the hyena's of the financial world. We kill...brutally and, seemingly, indisciminately...while laughing an taunting the whole time. Unfortunaly all of this are making the practice more restrictive. I think the answer lies in offshore trading. We will see fairly soon...
