About 75% of the American people favor the criminalization of partial birth abortions, and opinion on abortion overall divides about 50-50 (the fact which started this conversation). There is no "vast majority of people" blah blah blah. No one, not even those who want to criminalize abortion, regard women as chattel, though. The State may compel you to give a blood or urine sample in a criminal investigation; it may conscript you into the armed forces; it may, upon conviction of a crime, incarcerate you; it may determine a course of medical treatment, in conjunction with relatives, if you are deemed incompetent; and I am sure that if there were a sufficient rationale, you could be compelled to eat....well, you know. There is no absolute right to your own body. The State is in the morality business, upholding those values that affect the good order and well- being of society.
