In early trading, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 85.57, or 1 percent, at 8,690.61, after soaring 180.87 on Thursday and rolling up a gain of 2 percent so far for the week.
The broader market was also lower. The Nasdaq composite index fell 15.25, or 1.1 percent, to 1,423.21, following an advance of 37.39 in the previous session. The Standard & Poor's 500 index declined 9.89, or 1.1 percent, to 917.68, having gained 17.64 on Thursday.
Investors were unnerved after hearing the nation's unemployment rate remained at 6 percent in December as a disappointing holiday season for retailers and manufacturers cost more than 101,000 jobs, the biggest loss in 10 months, according to the Labor Department. Analysts expected jobs to rise by 30,000. |
