Well, the concept of aristocracy arose before or during the era of Greek empire, and the term arises from the Greek. As far as I know, the Greeks had no hereditary aristocracy in the sense that he European nobility did -- the Greeks had leading families just as we do, but I don't believe they had a titled or hereditary nobility.
