If I had held Oracle stock since 1991, I would have been even less likely to begrudge him his recent payday.

Given that you now hopefully understand that Oracle has only been able to increase book value (shareholder equity) by 456 million on paid in capital of 4.84 billion dollars in 14 years time, do you feel that Larry Ellison's recent 706 million dollar payday in 2001 is reasonable? Doesn't it seem a little crazy to be paying the CEO more money than the company has earned and retained in its entire lifetime? Your rationale behind not "begrudging" Larry is to note that the stock price has performed well over these 14 years, but again, one can separate out past performance of the business from past performance of the stock price. Were Oracle a privately held company and you were one of the private investors, I am sure you would be seriously disappointed in Oracle's inability to significantly increase book value over paid in capital in 14 years time, and even more disappointed to find that you have been paying your CEO substantially more money than the aggregate amount of earnings that the company has been able to retain.

Disclaimer: The above statements are backward looking statements (past results) and are likely very poor predictors of Oracle's business performance or stock price performance going forward.
