This is the truly stupid part of the editorial:

For the government has asserted nothing less than the ability to designate certain individuals -- at the whim of the president -- as beyond the shelter of the Bill of Rights.

Not just anyone can be designated "beyond the shelter", certainly not whimsically. It addresses the case of someone captured fighting with hostile troops, who has been certified to have come into custody in such a manner. Now, the Post may have a point that factual disputes may exist, needing judicial airing, and it is good of the Post to admit that a citizen who fights for the enemy can be held as an enemy combatant, but the assumption that the Administration would abuse the privilege, and not take into account ambiguous situations for review, is gratuitous, and the overblown characterization of the ruling leaves one wondering if they would prefer the courts being tied up with bogus claims of citizenship or unprovable claims of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Surely there should at least be a way to expedite consideration of the seriousness of the dispute, when it appears that the person was merely another enemy combatant, without full judicial review..........
