The beauty is that if we establish a base there we can stop supporting those despots in Saudi Arabia. Thus helping to erase an image of somewhat of a monster ourselves in the area.

Yeah we have sucha history (the Sha of Iran comes to mind) But hopefully now that we are not involved in the cold war we don't have incentive to install an anti communist right wing monster of our own. Think about the possibilities a secular government, the oil starts flowing, the Iraqi people can reap the benefits, their lifestyle goes up ,Iranian youth seeing the possibilities finally get the courage to kick out the old Mullas. A new middle east is born and we all live happily ever after.....T'will more than pay for itself.
