OK, good point.

It was well intentioned, motivated by a desire NOT to be an empire, NOT to be the sole superpower when the Cold War ended.

And we weren't happy with the results. Admittedly by "we" I mean conservatives, but nobody really expected (did they?) that the power vacuum would be filled by religious fundamentalists?

Something keeps nagging at me every so often. The Whole Earth Review, in one of its incarnations, had a cover story predicting that one of the side effects of the dismemberment/dismantlement of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War would be exactly the type of internecine religious and ethnic squabbles we saw and see, but I can't find my copy and can't find a reference online.
