I just think it is a stretch to say that any taxation is "prohibiting the free exercise" or religion. It would be similar to saying that any tax or restriction on guns (say applying sales tax to gun purchases or the laws that prevent gun ownership by convicted felons) is a violation of the 2nd amendment.

An esp. burdensome tax esp. if targeted just at religions could be considered prohibiting the free exercise of religion but not making contributions to religions tax deductible would not prohibit people from practicing their religion.

The power to tax is the power to destroy but having the power to destroy is not the same as being guilty of causing destruction. The US military has the power to destroy my house and my car. Can I sue for the value of the property because the government has the capability to destroy my property even if it does not actually destroy it.
