Simon was more than inept. He was unacceptable to a large portion of CA's population. Too conservative on too many issues that counted to too many Californians.

The Republican Party in this state often exhibits a death wish and did so in the choice of Simon as its candidate. Basically, about 1/2 of 1/3 (the portion of Californians registered as Republicans and allowed to vote in the Republican Primary) can pick the Republican Party candidate.

That's 1/6th of the electorate picking the candidate.

A large chunk of those Republican voters are in the Central Valley and southern CA, largely south of LA. They tend to be highly conservative and not representative of the other 5/6 of voters. They pick a conservative candidate in a fairly liberal state.

When their candidate is presented to that other 5/6, he's dead.

The CA Republican Party would rather be right than elected.
