it's not just the left's problem, Lindy. the right has no viable plan for moving forward either, as far as I can see; there's little reason to believe that "not dealing with them" will accomplish much

As far as I can see, everybody is waiting for four things to happen, though only the first two are mentioned in public:

1) The Israeli elections
2) The US campaign in Iraq, and the resulting changes in the Mideast alignment and US influence.
3) War-weariness bringing the intifada to a slowdown if not a truce. This could be by Israeli withdrawal, but I think Palestinian weariness will come first. Not only are they suffering worse, but, at bottom, they know they are not existentially threatened.
4) Arafat's death and the Palestinian War of Succession, bringing new Palestinian management to the scene.

After these four things happen, things will look different, though there is no guarantee of their looking better. But at least the diplomats will have fresh scenarios to work with.
