Did you read George Bush's book "A Charge to Keep?" In that he explains why he made certain life and death decisions for death row prisoners. There were two basic principles, one of which was "did the inmate receive the full consideration of the law." It seems like a much better principle than the one used by Ryan to let all those guys out.

I'm not against the death penalty, but on one hand I wonder if it's worth the perpetual battle over it. Life without parole is a pretty severe sentence, and unlike death it's undoable. Ryan's argument that only two percent of the perps get the death penalty while 98 percent get sometimes much less carries no weight with me. However, there should be some comparability between sentences. I don't like to hear prosecutors like Janet Reno declaring for political purposes "We WILL seek the death penalty [for the perps at Oklahoma City, unknown at the time]." She sure didn't mind applying it to an evil white guy, but you sure hear a lot of whining about the consequences facing the beltway sniper.
