Hmmmmm... Wouldn't this "Tap the Oil" approach destroy the tremendous good will we enjoy throughout the Arab and Moslem world?..

My compliments. Irony is best delivered deadpan, something I often have trouble with. Just for the record, Scott's story was indeed from Newsday, as attributed, newsday.com

Some back of the envelope calculations: Iraq's current production rate of 2 million barrels a day could maybe be rounded up to a billion barrels a year, in the near term. If you figure profits of $20/barrel, that's a round $20billion / year, which could support a little more than the current $1 billion / month operation in Afghanistan. It would take a long time to pay off a $200 billion war effort, though. Looting Iraqi oil for 10 years or so would make a good and proper mockery of the "Democracy in Iraq" line, maybe the W crowd could follow up on the "hearts and minds" front by sending Bernard Lewis and Daniel Pipes in to deliver the locally popular "Arab Mind" lecture to the occupied population.
